Helping Girls Bridge the Language Gap
Every member of the House of Grace staff speaks both Akha and Thai. That ability allows them to help the girls understand their schoolwork, strengthen their Thai language skills, and make the transition from their village schools to classrooms in Chiang Rai. But learning Thai is only the beginning.
English is a mandatory subject in Thai schools, which means many of the girls are learning not just a second language, but a third. House of Grace staff members provide tutoring and encouragement to help them develop their English skills and succeed in the classroom.
And then there is a fourth language:
Chinese. With many businesses in the region owned or operated by people of Chinese descent, the ability to speak and understand Chinese can be a valuable professional skill. Recognizing the opportunities this can create, House of Grace provides the girls with opportunities to study Chinese as well.
That means a girl who once arrived speaking primarily Akha can have the opportunity to develop proficiency in
Akha, Thai, English, and Chinese.
More Than Words
Learning multiple languages is about much more than being able to carry on a conversation. Moving between languages exercises the brain and can help strengthen memory, problem-solving, attention, and other cognitive skills. It also gives young people the ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds and better understand cultures beyond their own.
For the girls at House of Grace, however, there is another important benefit:
opportunity. Language skills can open doors in tourism, hospitality, international business, education, translation, and many other fields. In an increasingly connected economy, being able to communicate in multiple languages can distinguish a job applicant and expand the kinds of careers available to her.
For a girl growing up in poverty or with limited educational opportunities, those skills can become part of a pathway toward independence and financial security.

At House of Grace–Thailand, the goal is not simply to help a girl pass her next exam. It is to equip her for the life that comes after school. Every tutoring session, vocabulary lesson, English assignment, and Chinese class is an investment in her future.

The girl who arrives at House of Grace struggling to understand the language used in her classroom may one day walk into a job interview able to communicate in four languages.
